I&R

« Information and Referral is the art, science and practice of bringing people and services together.

When individuals, families and communities have questions about social or governmental resources and services (for ex. about housing, health or financial assistance), I&R is there for them. I&R is an essential part of the human services system.

Effective Information and Referral requires :

I&R Specialists who :

  • listen actively to understand the client’s needs and issues
  • complete a thorough non-clinical assessment
  • explain to the clients their options
  • advocate on behalf of clients if required
  • follow-up to ensure clients have received help needed

Resource Specialists managing a database that is :

  • accurate
  • up-to-date
  • comprehensive

THE InformUSA MANUAL OF I&R TRAINING – Canadian edition (previously : ABCs of I&R)

The manual is the foundation for training new Information & Referral specialists and Resource specialists. It also serves as a reference tool and refresher for more experienced staff – especially anyone preparing to obtain their certification. The 600-page manual is divided in two sections, I&R Specialist and Resource Specialist.
